Using CGI/Perl
Our servers run Perl 5, and we have
several preinstalled CGI utilities available for use by our
users. These CGI scripts are most commonly used by our web
hosting customers who do not author their web sites with Microsoft®
FrontPage®. FrontPage has many "cgi-like" functions
already built-in including features such as hit counters,
form-to-email handling, site search, etc.
To prevent unauthorized use of our CGI programs, we
ask that you send a request
to our technical support department for instructions on how
to access our preinstalled CGI programs. Please
include your name and your web address in your E-mail.
Here are a few good resources for available CGI/Perl
programs on the Internet:
We ask that you try to limit implementation of
untested, third-party CGI programs unless no other option is
available (such as ASP, VBScript, Java, JavaScript, etc.).
Since CGI's run server-side, a poorly written CGI program can
adversely affect our other web sites on the same NT-based web
server with CPU and memory consumption. We have enjoyed
much success testing, configuring and installing customized CGI/Perl
programs for our customers. While we will gladly offer
some assistance in evaluating cgi/perl scripts for suitability,
an installation or set-up fee may apply if we need to configure
a particular script for use on your web site.
Please be advised that we do not provide script
debugging or CGI consulting as part of our free technical
support services. Any CGI support beyond setting basic
permissions and providing server path information will incur a
fee.
It may be helpful to note that exploring the
possibilities of using Java, JavaScript and/or Active
Server Pages can offer as many benefits as CGI/Perl. It is
not necessary for us to review these programs before you use
them on your web site, as we do with CGI. This may offer you
more flexibility and freedom in using these web programming
options.
