Using SharePoint without Microsoft Office
SharePoint Team Web Site features available without MS
Office, only a Web browser with no versions of Office 2000, Office
XP, Microsoft Office Web Components or a free Microsoft Office
Viewer/Converter installed.
In this environment a web visitor can still perform
all of the browser-based features of SharePoint
Team Web Sites. But, unfortunately, a web visitor
cannot:
- Create new Microsoft Office documents using the options
available on the SharePoint web site
- Edit existing documents on the SharePoint site via the
SharePoint 'real-time' editing features
Notes: For editing non-MS Office documents and files, the files
can be downloaded, edited and re-uploaded to achieve this
purpose)
- Import lists from Excel
- Import or Export Outlook Contact information or Calendar
information into their computer
Notes: A user can still
print out contact and calendar information, thus allowing a
certain level of participation in the Team site.
Missing is the ultra-handy features of
automated synching of calendar and contact information
with Outlook amongst your Team site users. Sorry!
- Use the SharePoint web features to edit or save changes
to any Microsoft Office document.
Notes: Viewing these
documents is still possible via the Microsoft Office
document viewer plug-in for Internet Explorer. At the
time of this writing, the web browser plug-in to view Office
documents is a free download available at the Microsoft web
site.
