FILTERING EMAIL IN MICROSOFT OUTLOOK EXPRESS
blackdot.gif (800 bytes)

In Outlook Express, mail filters are called "Rules."  To modify the rules for filtering your incoming mail, click on the Tools Menu and select Message Rules->Mail.  This will present you with the window for creating a new mail rule.

The way you create mail rules is pretty straightforward.  Just follow the numbers in the window:

  1. Select the conditions for your rule.
Select what part of the message you would like to run through your filter.  You may select multiple parts, if you wish.

  2. Select the actions for your rule.
Choose where to move, copy, delete, or send the message or perform a different action.  Again, you may select multiple actions.

  3. Modify the rule description.
When you check a box in part 1 or 2, a small description will appear in the text field in part 3.  Click the blue underlined part of description to customize it.

Clicking on each link will open a window where you can enter the correct information.

  4. Once you have completed steps 1-3, you can name your rule.  The window should look something like this:

Click OK to create the rule.  Congratulations, you have created a mail filter!

The rule will appear in a list along with any other rules you have created.  It is OK to have multiple rules to filter your email.  The more rules you use, the more specifically you can filter your email.  You can turn off a rule by unchecking the box next to it.
